I was inspired to become an End of Life Doula after being formally introduced to the role by a friend, and after working in helping professions all my life. After attending the training with Helen from Preparing the Way, I knew it was the path I wanted to follow. The training built on my prior interest, skills, knowledge, and experience in the area, so I pursued it with passion.
It was then too that I realised that I had been a Doula to several family members including both of my parents. I had also been passionate about delivering respectful and supportive end of life care to those in palliative and aged care (especially dementia care) when I was nursing.
The most rewarding part of the role is supporting the dying person, and their network, to be informed of their choices and to support them to have these wishes fulfilled. I feel privileged to play a role at this most significant time in people’s lives, to strive to create a meaningful death experience for all.
I am an intuitive, caring, compassionate, and professional person who has been inspired to demonstrate empathy and to be informed to understand end of life options to ensure: peace, trust, and choices; and to give courage to those with life limiting conditions and their loved ones.
