Supporting those at the end of their lives has been close to my heart since I worked in hospitals and Aged Care facilities as a nurse assist for several years at university. During this time I supported many people through the last days and weeks of their lives, something I have always considered an immense privilege.
Back then my dream was to set up a hospice where those at the end of their life and their loved ones can cherish life until the end. Instead of pursuing that dream I embarked on a corporate career in the pharmaceutical industry for many years until my partners teenage niece was diagnosed with terminal cancer and expressed the wish to be cared for at home. I offered to support the family in making this wish a reality and was there for the last month of Sophia’s life. Aside from supporting the family and help care for her, I liaised with the medical team and later the funeral directors to allow the family to focus on what mattered most, cherishing every moment with Sophia. I found the experience immensely rewarding and it reignited my passion.
So when the opportunity to leave corporate life and refocus came up last year, I chose to follow my passion and train as an End of Life Doula and out of that ‘Cherishing Life’ - End of Life Doula Services was created. My focus is on supporting those at the end of their life and those around them to treasure the moment(s) and add life to days by providing a safe pair of hands to guide, support and make empowered choices that represent their wishes.
