1. Why did you decide to become a Doula?
I decided to become a doula because I feel that every woman has the right to a positive birth experience and transition into motherhood. My first birth was very challenging with a very sick child. I ended up with post natal depression and I think a lot of that stemmed from the fact that my transition into motherhood was not very pleasant. If I can help prevent that happening to someone else then my journey was worth it.
2. What has been your most rewarding and favourite part of being a Doula?
The most rewarding part is helping women find an inner strength to birth their child, which they never thought they had. My favourite part is witnessing the miracle of birth – it never ceases to amaze me how beautiful it is.
3. What have you found to be most challenging as a Doula?
The fact that having a doula as part of your support team is only a new thing in Wollongong, has been very challenging. I have had a fair bit of negativity from care providers as they haven’t been exposed to the benefits of a doula. However as this is what I have been annointed to do, I won’t give in and hopefully in time they will see the benefits and welcome my presence.
4. What are your top 3 recommendations for the birthing woman
Apart from hiring a doula these are my top 3 recommendations.
1) Believe in your ability and strength to birth your child
2) Listen to your body – it will tell you what you need and what positions to be in to help with the birthing process.
3) Know your options and from that make a birth plan that is right for you
